Sorry I just don't feel like celebrating is the right thing to do right now....!

In DC, we have started planning PB Week activities and events but not recognitions. DC Bar awards event is normally in June; this year it will be virtual on the evening of 7/30.

We hadn't tied it explicitly to the October celebration (though maybe we could), but we are working on getting our 2019 Impact Report to introduce the new PAI director (me) and highlight PB volunteers based on hours worked - not cases, bc we have some volunteers who took maybe one case last year but put in 26 hours on it.
Pat Gerrich
26:51
Each year our Bankruptcy Court updates a Pro Bono Honor Roll on the Court's website, and we get to provide updated lists of volunteers who help in various ways--debt advice, pro bono bankruptcy cases, Bankruptcy Friends of the Court for reaffirmation hearings, etc.

Recently our staff delivered pies to offices of two great volunteer attorneys to thank them and their staff.

We do a pro bono honor roll for the Bankruptcy Court and for the Federal District Court as well (we have self-help clinics in both - we are Central district of Cal). It's not tied to Pro Bono Week, though.

In DC, we have always thought of Pro Bono Week as a recognition of the work that wouldn't get done without pro bono attorneys and to recruit new volunteers. This year, we are going to double-down on that two-prong approach with a racial justice lens.
Pat Gerrich

This is not directly related to the week in October. Does anyone have suggestions for creative ways to welcome/orient/engage new volunteers at this challenging time when we are socially distant and remote and can't have the in person contact we usually would have?

We are working heavily with law school students to try and inspire them to volunteer in the future. Also, we are reaching out to the small business community to inspire cooperation from PBs where they can help a company get back/stay on their feet and then create a paying client down the line.

Interns who know Zoom btw are great with Attorney (who often don't)

DC Bar Pro Bono Center just did its quarterly immigration clinic virtually. it is by phone only. a staff member does the intake call and provides volunteers a short blurb. Volunteer then returns the call, provides brief advice and referrals if needed, and then does the case summary write up for the staff.

We have had mixed results with courts' observance of social distance/PPE, which makes it hard for us to sign a volunteer up for attorney for the day. I think it also can discourage clients from showing up to future appearances after their intial one.
Pat Gerrich
49:19
Our courts now say they will require face coverings for entry and are inconsistent about whether they are letting the public know and about whether they will provide masks if a person does not have one. We are concerned that some people may be denied entry if they do not have masks.
Leigh Ferrin
49:48
Agreed! Masks are also required for us, and I do not believe that masks will be offered if someone doesn't have one.
Leigh Ferrin
50:01
We have heard that they will default people if they show up with a child (no childcare available) or no mask.
Leigh Ferrin
50:43
We have also been told that pro bono volunteers from some firms are not being allowed to appear in court - so they can't provide representation for our emergency protective orders, which are our only in-person hearings right now.

Here in Delaware we were actually successful in getting a grant to get a new telephone system and an online intake module that will help with our remote efficiency so that we can really take our time going back. I am holding a meeting this week with staff to discuss our return. We are lucky because there are only 9 of us and we can do a great deal remotely.
